A year after being shutout by the National League in Kansas City, the American League returned the favor on Tuesday night at Citi Field.
The AL rode their pitching staff to a 3-0 win in New York City, ending a three-game losing streak and ensuring that their entrant in the World Series will have home-field advantage.
Jose Bautista hit a sacrifice fly in the top of the fourth inning that gave the AL a 1-0 lead they would never relinquish. J.J. Hardy drove in another run on a fielder's choice in the fifth and Jason Kipnis hit an RBI double in the eighth for another insurance run.
The AL led 3-0 when Mariano Rivera came out of the bullpen to pitch in the eighth inning. He registered a perfect frame and was named MVP of the 2013 All-Star Game.
Joe Nathan closed out the AL victory for his first All-Star save, but opted to hand the game ball to Rivera after the final out.
